Deshaun Watson’s Browns introduction was a dance masquerading as a media conference [Video]
The 40-moment introductory media meeting — comprehensive of immediate issues and defiant solutions relating to Deshaun Watson and the 22 civil lawsuits alleging sexual assault towards him — was full. With the words carried out, the Cleveland Browns and their new quarterback applied their actions to make their views obvious — namely, that this was small business as standard in the NFL.
As the information convention ended, Watson stood driving a desk keeping a No. 4 Browns jersey in the air. He was flanked by typical supervisor Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski. All a few beamed as cameras clicked and area news movie-rolled.
This was a scene out of a standard NFL transaction, a celebratory moment of a new participant becoming a member of a workforce, a marketing prospect about the vivid future for the Browns.
There was no trace of any situation and uncertainty that instructed normally. At that moment, Watson was just a a few-time Professional Bowler and Cleveland was the blessed franchise that utilised 3 initially-round draft picks and a $230 million guaranteed deal to land him.
Smile. Just smile for those people cameras.
Anything else, although, ranged from unsure to unseemly. Two Texas grand juries have declined to indict Watson for any legal conduct for his interactions with individuals 22 gals, but the civil approach remains … and Watson mentioned he has no intention of settling (we’ll see).
Meanwhile, NFL willpower is likely to stick to, that means the Browns have no strategy when Watson will essentially see the field. And then there is the general scope of the allegations, repugnant even if they are not prosecutable.
Watson, on the other hand, was clear that he is innocent and, as these, all these therapeutic massage therapists alleging all these dreadful matters are lying. He continuously, and forcefully, preserved he was wrongly accused.
“I never ever assaulted any women of all ages,” Watson stated. “I by no means disrespected any women of all ages.”
It was a collection of traces he held going again to, pointing out that he was raised by a solitary mother and primarily women of all ages, thus these functions weren’t “in my DNA.” He dismissed the flood of allegations, primarily by impartial massage therapists who, to use normal terms, explained he forced himself on them all through what they assumed were reputable sessions.
“The factors that are off the field now that arrived up, caught me by surprise mainly because I did not do anything at all that these men and women are alleging,” Watson stated. “… I hardly ever assaulted, I in no way disrespected and by no means harassed any lady in my existence.”
At just one position he was questioned about trying to get counseling, if only to help avoid no matter what could have caused all of these plaintiffs.
“The counseling aspect is challenging,” Watson mentioned. “I really don’t have a problem. I do not have an challenge and that is what I have been indicating from the starting.”
To Watson, this is nothing, just a “stain” that he thinks he will get previous.
As for the Browns, when questioned instantly if they agreed with their new quarterback’s assessment of his innocence, Berry would only fall again on what he statements was an “extensive” and “thorough” investigation into the instances and Watson himself.
“We truly feel quite self-confident in Deshaun the human being,” Berry said. “We have a ton of faith in him and we feel that as he gets into the neighborhood he will have a beneficial affect.”
Meanwhile, in a later conference with reporters, Browns ownership – Dee and Jimmy Haslam – explained the fact Watson averted indictment in two separate grand jury proceedings was a considerable enhancement.
“I believe we got relaxed in the authorized procedure,” Dee Haslam stated. “We have to trust in the lawful system. And again, learning additional and more particulars about Deshaun as a man or woman we felt very good about Deshaun as a man or woman.”
This was a performative dance masquerading as a information meeting. Watson wanted to be clear he experienced done nothing completely wrong. The Browns wished to be sympathetic to criticism from supporters and outside teams that they took the conditions significantly and identify that this can be disturbing to numerous.
But in the conclusion there ended up the pics, a visible message that this was about football and the possibility for a forlorn franchise to get the type of megastar who can ultimately return them to championship contention.
“We think he’s a single of the very best players at the position in the activity,” Berry mentioned. “He’
s in his prime and we think it is really the most essential situation.”
Mentioned Watson, “You’re finding a potent chief who enjoys to do the job, who is heading to compete really, really really hard. A male who is heading to press everyone to their whole prospective so we can get a large amount of Tremendous Bowls.”
Watson’s on-industry enjoy is expected to be everything that has been promised. Just before missing the 2021 season because of to these allegations, there had been loads of men and women in the NFL who thought he was every little bit as great, or at the very least very equivalent, to Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes.

The allegations are the allegations, however. Although the extensive majority, based mostly on the publicly offered details, would be almost difficult to prosecute, it does not indicate Watson’s behavior — presuming all 22 girls are not lying — was excusable.
Watson states he’s innocent and it’s all produced up. Perhaps that is legal posturing, but it is a challenging glance for a information convention. He presented zero regrets, apologies, concerns or even the want for self-reflection.
In the meantime, it’s apparent Cleveland thought the complaints would go nowhere criminally and as a result could be settled civilly, especially just after arming Watson with that approximately quarter-billion dollar deal.
Watson was vowing to continue to battle for his name — “My intent is to continue on to clear my identify as a great deal as probable,” he claimed — but he’s nearly definitely likely to check out to resolve this speedily. Then it is really on to working with the NFL. For Cleveland, it all created feeling.
“We sense superior about Deshaun as a individual,” Berry explained. “We felt very good about what we realized about the situations … We do feel this is a determination that when it is evaluated over the very long operate will be a-constructive for our firm.”
That is what Cleveland can hope — even if it is not as inclined to declare Watson’s innocence as Watson was, that he can at least continue to be out of adequate issues to keep on being on the field of participate in.
It is a huge gamble because there is no telling. Perhaps Watson can. Perhaps he just cannot. That Watson is sticking with the concept that he hardly ever acted inappropriately and therefore doesn’t want to improve a factor likely isn’t a terrific detail for the Browns.
Both way, the terms were the words and phrases Friday. The photograph-op at the stop instructed the story, standard beaming faces as a new jersey is held aloft.
This is Cleveland. And this is Cleveland’s quarterback.
